Starting out from valley level, AV2 makes its way through farming villages to higher spectacular reaches well away from the hustle and bustle. The destination is the Plose, a nondescript mountain well known to winter skiers and mountain bikers, but (of greater interest to AV2 walkers) host to a superbly appointed rifugio. It’s a perfect first night out on the trek, as isolated from the main Dolomites it offers unrivalled views onto their northwestern faces, which actually start here. A brilliant start.

A short stretch along tarmac gives way to lovely paths and meadows, then forest for a long, long climb – which can, nonetheless, be shortened. In fact non-purists will appreciate the buses and lift to ease the 1900m height gain demanded by this opening stage: SAD buses from the railway station run to San Andrea and the departure station of the Plose Seilbahn (gondola car) that whisks you up to Valcroce; the summer operating period running from mid-June to early October.

From Valcroce you are in open heath land, where panoramas are non-stop through 360°. Generally speaking no particular difficulty is encountered, but the massive height gain should not be under-rated.

A final variant cutting out Plose altogether makes use of the bus from Bressanone via San Andrea and Plancios, thence Skihütte (see Stage 2).
